Goodie Boxes for Our Young People

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

The sanctuary Sabbath School Class and Doris Grayem’s Sabbath School Class decided to send goodie boxes to the kids from our church, that are off at school. A large assortment of goodies had been purchased and the class members provided home made cookies. On Sabbath, October 31, following the two Sabbath School Classes pot luck dinner, the class members stayed to pack the goodie boxes. These boxes were quite large and were literally full of all kinds of wonderful treats.

A “Thinking of You” card was included in each box letting the kids know they were being thought of and were missed. We have heard that all four boxes were received and the kids loved receiving them.

Little things like this can be comforting to our young people when they are away from home. It’s also little things like this jester of love that they will always remember.

Leonard and Lela Brown helped out with this project by making sure the boxes were mailed out right away.

Calvin Taylor Concert

Sunday, July 6th, 2008

The Akron First Seventh-day Adventist church will be hosting a concert by Dr. Calvin Taylor on Saturday, July 12 at 8pm. There is no charge for admission.

Dr. Taylor has toured throughout the world, performing in North and South America, Europe, Ukraine, and the Far East. Holding degrees in music from Oberlin Conservatory, The University of Michigan, and the University of Kentucky, Calvin has authored several music books and has ten solo recordings to his credit. Movements from his Sunrise Symphony have been performed by several orchestras including Nashville, Shreveport, South Arkansas, and Detriot Symphony Orchestras.

Awarded a full scholarship to Oberlin College Conservatory of Music, Calvin Taylor’s ability to improvise led him to become the first student in the school’s over one hundred fifty-year histroy to improvise a graduate concert encore. And with an unusually large hand span of over 1 1/2 octaves, Dr. Taylor presents sounds and colors at the keyboard which would normally require four hands.

Chili Open

Friday, April 4th, 2008

Our “Chili Open” was a success. The weather cooperated – it was a beautiful sunny day. Eighteen of us enjoyed a chili lunch, salads, corn bread, and yummy desserts. After lunch we had a good time just catching up on visiting. The next lunch will be on Wednesday, April 30 at noon. Bring your favorite casserole or vegetable; dessert and drink will be provided. Bring a friend or family member to join us for good food and fellowship. Goldenaires is for anyone of retirement age. If you have any questions, talk to Nancy Potts.
